Ivo of Chartres
(c. 1040–1115)
   Bishop, Legalist and Saint.
   Ivo was educated first in Paris and then as a pupil of lanfranc at Bec. He was consecrated Bishop of Chartres in 1090. For a short time he was imprisoned, after opposing King Philip I’s determination to remarry. However, he is remembered as a formidable Canon Lawyer. His Panormia and Decretum brought together a wide variety of ecclesiastical laws, laid down principles of interpretation and laid the groundwork for a synthesis. Meanwhile the Cathedral School of Chartres was flourishing and Ivo’s surviving letters and sermons throw interesting light on the religious life of the period.
